DAB 510 PROJECT 1: FOLIE DESIGN
LOCATION: HOWARD SMITH WHARVES
The project objective is to design a Folie that responds to the site with relation to its cultural and social context as well as its immediate surroundings. The folie's function is to provide a learning experience for the user while working within the confines of a 5x5x5 metre spatial cube.

| site closeup with breakdown of key elements namely the story bridge, cliff face and wharf area |
- constructed in conjunction with the story bridge
- originally brisbane central wharves then leased to shipping company company Howard Smith co. ltd between 1930s-1960s hence more known as Howard Smith Wharves.
- during this period of use, storage sheds were constructed . predominantly constructed out of hardwood timber and corrugated iron.
- during world war ll, air raid shelters were constructed.
- wharf buildings provide evidence of pre 1940 port of Brisbane facillities
- air raid shelters are one of the most intact group of WW2 air raid shelters in Brisbane.
- the site is currently listed in the Queensland Heritage Register
In this case, the three most important elements that should be incorporated to the folie design are identified being the story bridge, the cliff face and the wharf area and the learning objective would be to understand and experience the materials used and the relationship between the materials and the relationship within the site through innovative interaction.
